1.6 MILLION HOUSES IN ISTANBUL DO NOT HAVE EARTHQUAKE INSURANCE

While number of houses without compulsory the Turkey housing earthquake insurance tariff (DASK) exceeds 9.2 million throughout Turkey, Bolu with 84.10 percent and Yalova with 82.10 percent are leading provinces with high insurance rates. This rate drops to 31.10 percent in Gümüşhane and 14.20 percent in Hakkari.

Despite the fact that 23 years have passed since the earthquake, which caused thousands of casualties and billions of dollars of economic damage, the number of earthquake-insured housing has increased every year, but the desired levels have still not been reached.

Currently, earthquake insurance has been taken out for 53.90 percent of the 20 million 32 thousand houses in Turkey, that is, 10 million 795 thousand 698 houses. As of yet, 9 million 236 thousand 302 houses do not have Compulsory Earthquake Insurance.

Marmara, where the most intense urbanization is experienced in the country and where 6 million 840 thousand houses are located, has become the region that shows the most interest in earthquake insurance. There is Compulsory Earthquake Insurance for 4 million 302 thousand 607 houses in the region with a rate of 62.90 percent.

THE LOWEST REGION IS THE BLACK SEA

The Marmara Region was followed by the Aegean with 54.60 percent, Central Anatolia with 49.20 percent, Eastern Anatolia with 48.70 percent, Southeastern Anatolia with 48.30 percent, the Mediterranean with 47.20 percent and the Black Sea with 44.40 percent.

The insurance rates of metropolitan cities reached 61.90 percent in Istanbul, 58.50 percent in Izmir, 56.10 percent in Ankara, 57.40 percent in Bursa and 53.40 percent in Antalya.

The provinces with the highest compulsory earthquake insurance rate were Bolu with 84.10 percent, Yalova with 82.10 percent and Tekirdağ with 78.70 percent, while the provinces with the lowest insurance rate were Hakkari with 14.20 percent, Gümüşhane with 31.10 percent and Muş with 31.90 percent.

1.2 BILLION TL HAS BEEN PAID IN 22 YEARS

Paying September 2000 billion 1 248 million liras to the damage owners after the earthquakes that occurred since the establishment of DASK 1 billion 248 million liras was made. In Istanbul, where a major earthquake is expected by experts and is called the “capital of the economy”, the insurance rate has risen above the average in the Marmara Region.

While it is seen that 61.9 of the 4 million 153 thousand houses in the megacity are insured, the number of houses that do not have earthquake insurance was recorded as 1 million 582 thousand 505 units. Experts call for DASK to be built on houses against earthquakes, strengthening risky buildings and converting them if necessary.
